Porto Flavia Mine

Porto Flavia is a remarkable feat of early twentieth-century industrial engineering, carved directly into the limestone cliffs of Masua on the southwestern coast of Sardinia. Nine enormous vertical storage silos, capable of holding up to 10,000 tonnes of mineral ore, line the cliff interior. The ornamental concrete arches and observation tower at the seaward exit were an unusual design request from the mine's corporate owners, giving this working industrial site a surprising architectural elegance. The mine remained operational until the 1960s and is now a protected heritage monument open to guided tours.
