The Constant Subterranean Climate
Whilst outdoor temperatures fluctuate significantly between seasons—reaching up to 35°C (95°F) in July or falling to 8°C (46°F) in January—the climate inside the limestone tunnels of Porto Flavia remains completely constant at 16°C (61°F) year-round.
This insulation is due to the depth of the galleries and the surrounding thermal mass of the mountain. Drafts coming from the cliff windows can create a wind-chill effect, making the tunnels feel colder than 16°C (61°F), especially in summer when you enter from the baking coast.
Understanding this microclimate is essential for selecting your travel attire. Preparing for the temperature shock when walking from the beach path into the cave will ensure your visit is comfortable.
⚠️ UV & Sea Swell Warning
Sardinia has intense UV indexes, reaching extreme levels (8-10) from June to August. Even in April and September, the index averages 6.
Strong Mistral winds can cause rough sea swells that might cancel boat tours. Check local maritime forecasts before booking any marine transfers.
